Richard is a Partner in Valor Siren Ventures. Prior to his employment with VSV, he was the first Entrepreneur in Residence at Starbucks Corporation driving innovation across product, supply chain, and customer experience at one of the world’s largest retailers. Richard worked directly with the senior executive leadership team at Starbucks Corporation throughout his time as the Entrepreneur in Residence. He successfully identified, implemented, and managed the adoption of food technology and retail technology products and services for Starbucks Corporation.

Richard started his career at Microsoft in 1988 where he drove four waves of innovation and started more than a dozen businesses for the company. He began in operating systems and pioneered client server computing with OS/2 and the IBM relationship then helped build Microsoft’s first value added reseller channel on Windows NT called the Solution Provider Network. Richard subsequently moved to drive Microsoft’s multimedia reference business with products like Encarta and Bookshelf. His final assignment was pioneering the early consumer internet initiatives, launching more than five businesses in four years. Richard’s focused on building teams and recruiting talent to Microsoft including the CEO Satya Nadella.

After Microsoft Richard turned from intrapreneur to entrepreneur and created one of the world’s leading game companies, Cranium. Cranium sold more than 20 million games across the globe and ultimately was acquired by Hasbro in 2007. Richard served on the Board of Directors for the Toy Industry as Cranium pioneered new channels of distribution and demonstrated breakthrough product development with multiple award winning games. 

Richard has continued to create new companies while supporting and mentoring entrepreneurs throughout the world in categories ranging from beverage to mobile customer experiences to supply chain visualization. Richard holds an honors degree in computer science from Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Richard is in the Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame in his home country of Scotland.
